There are many suppliers of barcodes on the web.  Most of these suppliers are using a perfectly legal loophole where they 'on-sell' a barcode that was bought before GS1 (the official world organisation for barcodes) granted limited licences.  That was fine until the retailers - working in conjunction with GS1, began implementing a new rule.  Their rule was that suppliers to the retailers had to provide a copy of their GS1 registration (in their name).  When you buy someone elses codes you don't have this proof.

OK, so it might be alright to get a 'loophole barcode' to start with and when you're established, or supplying the big boys, then register with GS1.  The problem you have then is that you have thousands of products labelled with the wrong codes.

In order to secure your barcodes - go to GS1, pay the subscription fee and have legal and future proof codes.
